Senator Nelson to meet with Army Corps of Engineers

Senator Ben Nelson says he is deeply concerned about the Corps’ 2011-2012 operating plan, and the Corps unwillingness to adjust the amount of water in reservoirs in response to last summer’s runoffs.
Nelson says doing the same thing this year and hoping for a different result is not acceptable.
He wants to know if their plans for next year reflect the lessons learned from this summer’s flooding
Nelson says if more capacity to hold water upstream would have cost less than the mediation, then perhaps they should talk about adjustments to the reservoir and levee systems.
Senator Nelson will meet with the Corps and Brigadier General John McMahon tomorrow. Nelson says he will ask the Corps some tough questions, including plans for sudden rainfall or climate change.
Senator Nelson says weather centers are predicting a La Nina effect this year. With heavy snowfalls already in Wyoming this fall with possibility of heavy snow and spring rains in the region, he is concerned that the Army Corps of Engineers did not plan accordingly.
“Doing the same thing this year and hoping for a different result is not acceptable.” Nelson says.
