State pushes economic development programs despite low unemployment rate (AUDIO)

Nebraska moves to build on its economic success, enacting three new economic development programs.
The programs are part of the Talent and Innovation Initiative. The Business Innovation Act will distribute up to $7 million in competitive grants for research, prototype development and product commercialization for small businesses.
Economic Development Director Richard Baier says the Site and Building Development Fund will award $3 million to build new or renovate.
“Our first priority is infrastructure to industrial sites as well as to support renovation of existing buildings,” according to Economic Development Director Richard Baier.
Awards in the Site and Building Development Fund range from a quarter of a million dollars to half a million.
The Nebraska Economic Gardening Program will provide grants of up to $10,000 for eligible service providers and non-profits.
Nebraska enjoys an unemployment rate of barely over 4%, the second lowest state unemployment rate. The state has seen an increase in population, which helps add to the workforce available.
