Grain bin explodes in Fremont

Fremont residents awoke to sirens blaring when the Fremont Fire department raced to Washington and Union Street in order to contain a grain bin fire. The incident occurred at about 5:15am when authorities received word an explosion occurred. Firefighters say the bin actually collapsed into the street. Fremont police set up a ½ mile parameter around the area to keep people away from the scene while firefighters continued their work. Captain Todd Berndt says it all started when someone said they heard a loud bang. People had witnessed smoke coming from the grain bin days before. No one was hurt in the fire and Berdnt says the alfalfa might have caused the fire to smolder along with pallets. No word on estimated damages and the bin was removed at about 7am.
