Gas tax is heading down

Nebraskans have been purchasing more vehicles and also buying more gas. Steve Maraman with the State Roads Department tells us that is resulting in the state’s variable gas tax heading down.
“We’re in the situation too where more fuel efficient vehicles are out there and again you would think consumption would be down, but I honestly don’t know what’s happening, consumption for July, August, September is exceeding all past actual receipts for that time period and for the two previous fiscal years.”
The variable motor fuel tax for January thru June 30th will be 26.4 cents per gallon… a decrease from the current 27.1 cents per gallon tax.
