Flood says the idea is to get out in front of budget woes

Facing a budget shortfall of nearly $1 billion dollars, state lawmakers have come up with the initial options for cutting the budget. Speaker of the Legislature Mike Flood told us, the final cutting decision won’t be made until late into the 2011 session.
“The idea was to get out in front of it, put the options on the table and see what we need to do when we get to the month of may in terms of putting our budget together.”
Flood says the cuts aren’t as simple for the next biennium as they were for the current budget because there will be need this time to cut entire programs to save money. Flood does not anticipate a tax increase of any kind to fill the budget gap.
