Experts testify on proposed pipeline

Testimony was heard in front of the Legislature’s Natural Resources Committee from experts on the placement of the TransCanada oil Pipeline through Nebraska. The area of the Ogallala Aquifer has been of specific concern. University of Nebraska Professor Jim Goeke has been studying the project.
“A leak might impact an area, it’s going to be relatively localized, we’re not talking miles, we’re talking maybe 10’s or 100’s of feet at a max.
Southwestern Holt County is at greatest risk because the water table is close to the surface. University of Nebraska Professor John Gates says the water in the Aquifer flows east, so there is even the possibility of contamination eventually flowing into the Platte River in areas of Lincoln and Omaha.
