#3 Wayne State volleyball upset, #10 UNK moves on in regionals

#13 Metro State defeated #3 Wayne State College in four sets Thursday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Division II Central Regional Volleyball Tournament in Marshall, Minnesota by scores of 28-26, 20-25, 25-18 and 25-16.
Senior middle hitter Jennifer Hefner led Wayne State in hitting with 11 kills and finished her Wildcat career with 1,540 to rank fourth all-time. Junior outside hitter Tali Fredrickson had her 14th double-double of the season with 10 kills and 16 digs while junior middle hitter Mindy Moody added 10 kills. Junior libero Leigh Connot contributed 11 digs while senior setter Diedra Artz was credited with 41 set assists.
Three seniors played their final match in a Wildcat uniform. Diedra Artz, Lea Hartigan and Jennifer Hefner posted a 102-34 record with four NCAA Tournament appearances in their Wildcat careers. The Wildcats who were ranked number one in the country at one point this season finishes the season 26-4.
The 10th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack and solid defense to beat 7th-ranked Minnesota-Duluth in four sets (-22, 13-25, -17, -18).
The fourth-seeded Lopers (30-4) will play Friday night at 7:30 p.m. against top-seed SW Minnesota State. The Mustangs rallied past RMAC-member Colorado Mines, 3-2, in the last match Thursday.
