Today is the 235th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps. Local Omaha area Marines and veterans gathered at Freedom Park Wednesday to dedicate a monument of the Marine Seal. Mike Lewzader was one of the veterans involved in restoring a very unique plaque of the Marine seal.
“One of our newer members has a company that was doing some work out in Lincoln and in the weeds out there he saw this monument.”
Lewzader says the plaque was found on property belonging to a Lincoln company that was going out of business and it was destined for the junk yard. Instead, the plaque was cleaned and set in a brick and concrete base.
“Had a plaque made in a timely fashion so we could bring this all together on the 235th birthday and that makes it even more appropriate.”
The Marine Corps was founded on this date in 1775.
