Nebraska VA turns 60

An anniversary celebration is planned for Wednesday morning in the main lobby of the VA Medical Center in Omaha. VA Nebraska – Western Iowa Health Care System spokesman, Will Ackerman tells us the they are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the facility in Omaha and at other V-A centers across the state.
“60 years of service at the Grand Island VA and 80 years of service at the Lincoln VA and the Lincoln VA was established the same year, 1930, as the VA was first established.”
Ackerman says at 10am Wednesday, they will be having a ceremony that will feature several state dignitaries as well as one staff member who knows the VA inside and out.
“Here in Omaha, we are going to have some picture displays from things throughout the years at the VA Medical Center. We are also going to have an event where Congressman Lee Terry and Senator Nelson and one of our VA staff members who has been with us for 50 years about why we exist, how it has changed and really how we are honoring veterans.”
Ackerman says things have definitely improved regarding the health care of veterans over the years.
“60 years ago when we opened the doors, we were a 504-bed inpatient facility. Things have changed over the past 60 years where a lot of the health care is focused on outpatient health care.”
