A 17 month moratorium would be placed on new hospitals in Nebraska under a proposal receiving first round approval today. Nebraska Hospital Association spokeswoman Kelly Porter tells us that it is a good chance to study the impact of physician owned hospitals on our state.
“By cherry picking the most profitable services, physician owned hospitals threaten the existing services currently offered by the community by local hospitals.”
Supporters say its needed to help rein in state Medicaid costs among other things. Grand Island State Senator Mike Gloor, a former hospital CEO, points out that more than 50 percent of hospitals’ revenue comes from Medicaid and Medicare.
