Legislators are passing an amendment that would give local governments the opportunity to keep bars open until 2 AM, instead of the current 1 AM closing time in the state. Senator Amanda Mcgill of Lincoln says she thinks people drink more quickly because of the 1 AM closing time, and could take their time if they had an extra hour. Senator Gwen Howard of Omaha says keeping bars open later would bring out rowdier people that may wake your children up at night.
“I don’t buy the argument that staying at a bar later makes you a more responsible drinker. i’ve never seen any statistics on that, I would find that really very hard to believe. that would give you more opportunity to drink certainly.”
Some Senators say conventions choose to locate outside of Nebraska because of the early bar closing time and contributes to the brain drain in the state.
