Clifford Hardin dies, former NU chancellor, US Ag Secty

A Nebraskan who played key roles at the University of Nebraska and in the Nixon Administration died on Sunday.
Clifford Hardin was 94 and died of natural causes in Lincoln. Hardin became chancellor of the University of Nebraska in 1954 and was named president when the N-U system was established in 1968. At the time, Hardin was 38, the youngest university president in the country.
He left the state the following year to serve as U-S Agriculture Secretary under President Richard Nixon, a position he held until 1971. His tenure included passage of the 1970 Farm Bill.
He later served as vice president for research at Ralston Purina and at age 65, became director of the Center for the Study of American Business at Washington University.
