It came to an end last night for the number one seeded Nebraska Cornhuskers. Kentucky looked a lot quicker and played the style of the game they are accustomed to. NU shocked by the Wildcats 76-67 loss ending the Huskers season. I say it was shocking because Kentucky was picked to finish 11th in the 12 team SEC. The Wildcats used an 11-1 run to start the second half and led by as many as 19 over the Big 12 champs.
Huskers’ coach Connie Yori said the game came down to scraping for loose balls and not winning the rebound battle which Kentucky held a 36-25 advantage.
Connie Yori’s comment.

NU was up 17-16 after Dominique Kelley completed a three point play with 11:50 to go in the first half. Kentucky then went on a 7-1 run over next three minutes to open up a 23-18 lead. A’dai Mathies extended that lead for Kentucky to ten at 35-25 with 5:21 to play. Mathies led UK with 21 points.
The Wildcats maintained that lead for the rest of the first half and went into the locker room leading 43-34. Nebraska missed their first six shots to start the second half, connecting on just one free throw as the lead jumped to 54-35 with just over fifteen minutes to play. The lead was still 19 with just under 10 minutes left at 61-42 before the Huskers tried to make one more charge. Cory Montgomery talks about NU’s effort.

The Huskers went on a 14-7 spurt to close the game to 68-56 after freshmen Lindsey Moore nailed a three pointer with 4:08 to play. Moore would get it to seven with just under a minute left, but there wasn’t enough time for Nebraska to come back. Each team turned the ball over 16 times, but Nebraska’s turnovers came early while Kentucky got sloppy for a bit once they had the big lead. UK shot 50% for the game with Nebraska hitting 47%.
Dominique Kelley finished with 22 points, Kelsey Griffin with 15 and 12 rebounds and Cory Montgomery with 14. The Huskers finish their remarkable season at 33-2 and Griffin put it best by saying they put NU basketball on the map. Kelsey’s comment.
