An effort is underway to protect a Panhandle landmark from urbanization. The Nebraska State Historical Society says it wants to raise $1.2 million to preserve land around what it calls one of the most famous landmarks on the Oregon Trail.
Officials have launched a fundraiser to buy more than 500 acres at the base of Chimney Rock and to protect the land from future development. They hope to have the money collected by the end of the summer.
The Gordon Howard family owns the land, which is for sale. The fundraising goal is based on an appraisal of the land.
Major gifts from foundations, organizations and others are expected to lead the drive, such as an anticipated $300,000 grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust. Chimney Rock is located just south of Bayard and is featured on the back of the Nebraska state quarter.
