Special prosecutors will not have to be brought in to investigate the death of jail inmates under legislation advancing through first round debate from Senator Scott Lautenbaugh of Omaha. His bill would allow the county attorney to conduct the investigation. Senator Brenda Council of Omaha worries that a close relationship between the county attorney and police could cause wrongdoing. Lautenbaugh disagrees.
“I think that current law protects both law enforcement and the county attorneys because the county attorneys don’t have to be involved, they don’t raise the specter of any conflict of interest or any favoritism.”
Lautenbaugh disagrees saying county attorneys have already conducted investigations into prostitution allegations made against law enforcement.
