The Creighton Bluejays did not disappoint the home crowd as they win their first round game in the women’s NIT. The Bluejays beat the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks 76-65 and move on to play Kansas tomorrow afternoon.
Creighton would waste no time in this game, as they would jump out to an early 10-0 lead. But, Stephen F. Austin would not go away quietly. The Ladyjacks would hang around as with about four minutes left in the first, they would trail by11 and that is when they would make their run.
The Ladyjacks would get hot from behind the three point line and put together a 14-0 run to end the first half. Stephen F. Austin would go into the break with a 38-35 lead.
But in the second half, the Ladyjays would get right back to work. They scored the first four points, and would never give up the lead again. Creighton would then put together a 13-4 run to go back in front by 10 points on their way to the win.
All 10 Bluejays would find their way into the scorebook. They were led by Sam Schuett who would score 16 points. She would not be alone in scoring double figures as Ally Jensen had 13, Chevelle Herring scored 11 and Kellie Nelson had 10 points.
Creighton will now hit the road for the next game in the tournament. They will try to avoid losing for the third year in a row in the second round as they will be in Lawrence tomorrow afternoon taking on the Jayhawks. It will be some déjà vu for Creighton, as they will be trying to avenge their loss last season to Kansas in the second round of the NIT.
The Bluejays and the Jayhawks will tip off at 1:05.
