A debate on banning texting while driving turned interesting this morning when Senator Brenda Council of Omaha says passing this type of legislation could lead to people being pulled over for DWB, driving while black.
“Unfortunately, there are police officers who stop merely to harass people, this law opens the door to the kind of selective enforcement that we as a body should take every opportunity to stop.”
Under a bill advancing first round from Senator John Harms of Scottsbluff, you would be fined up to $500 for texting while driving. Some Senators argue this law would be too difficult to enforce and could be hard to prove without getting someone’s cell phone records. Harms says texting while driving leads to death on our roadways.
