Shaking a baby to death has led to a minimum 40 year prison sentence for a Scottsbluff father.
Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning announced the sentence Friday afternoon for 35-year-old John Chavez, who will spend 40 years to life in prison for the shaking death of his three-month-old daughter Aubrey in 2009.
According to Bruning’s office, Chavez told police he shook the girl twice to stop her from crying, but he thought she was sleeping when he put her in an infant seat. The girl’s mom came home from work later and found Aubrey unresponsive.
In January, Chavez was convicted of child abuse resulting in death in ScottsBluff County. He was also sentenced to between 12 and 24 months for methamphetamine possession.
