Petition resolution fails to advance

A resolution that would change the number of signatures needed on a petition to get an issue on the ballot is failing to advance on first round in the legislature. Senator John Nelson introduced the resolution to change the constitution. He says the average citizen would have a better chance of getting the number of signatures needed.
“At the  present levels that were set by the Supreme court back in 1994 which almost doubled what we did before, it’s out of reach.”
Senator Kate Sullivan of Cedar Rapids says the other side of this resolution is that it would make it even easier for out of state groups to get their issues on the ballot. Only 19 Senators decided to vote on the resolution.
