Hastings men lose heartbreaker

The #3 seed Broncos had to play on the road today in the semifinals of the GPAC Tournament against the #2 seed University of Sioux Falls and lost a heart breaker 108-103 in overtime.
Early on, the game stayed close with neither team gaining much of a lead until Hastings went on a 8-0 run to lead 28-16 with 8:26 left. The Cougars then finished the half strong and took a 45-42 lead into the intermission. Derek Fletcher had a good first half with 13 points leading the Broncos.
In the second half, the Cougars built a 67-60 point lead but shortly after, Hastings went on a 12-0 run. Then with 59 seconds to play and with the Broncos up 96-90, the Cougars finished regulation on a 7-1 run to tie it up.
In overtime, Hastings took a short lead with just over 3 minutes left to play, but USF made a crucial 3 pointer and free throws down the stretch to win the game 108-103. Jeremiah Slough led the team with 35 points, including 12 straight in the second half. Waid Vontz ended with 26, Fletcher with 17, and Brent McNurlin with 10. Thomas Frames led the Cougars with 30 points, 28 of which were in the final half and overtime.
The Broncos will now wait to see if they have done enough to qualify for the NAIA National Tournament.
