It was quite an explosion. The Nebraska Department of Roads took down a portion of the old South Omaha Veteran’s Memorial Bridge Tuesday morning. Spokesman Karl Burns says they are clearing the area for the implosion.
“We have the city of Omaha police on board and they will be monitoring traffic. We have some road closures. We have a 700 foot buffer zone to keep people away.”
Burns says several streets are closed in the area as a safety measure.
“The Dike Road, 10th street and a portion of Missouri Avenue closed. Any areas down by the bridge will be closed off to traffic.”
Nearly half of the bridge is coming down.
“This is part of the process to remove the old bridge. It has been closed for a while now and we continue to work on the new one.”
Work continues on the new four lane bridge that runs from south Omaha to Council Bluffs over the Missouri River. The new bridge is expected to be complete in June. The old span has been closed since last September.
