Barcode bill on to the final round

Senator Brenda Council OmahaA bill that would allow retailers to use the bar code on the back of your drivers license to gather your birth date and I-D number is advancing to the final round in the legislature, despite some concerns about identity protection. Senator Brenda Council of Omaha says making a purchase using a check right now should cause concern.
“In some places I’ve actually had the clerk photocopy my drivers license, in terms of the issue of the data and where the data is going I’m more concerned about the current system.”
The bill requires that the retailer get rid of the information collected from your license in 18 months. The goal is to sell alcohol, tobacco, and other age restricted items to only the people who are old enough.
