Bar Code Bill is first to pass the Legislature

Senator Deb Fischer ValentineThat bar code on the back of your driver’s license may be used at Nebraska retailers under a law proposed by Senator Kent Rogert of Tekamah. Many Senators expressed concern over the risk of identities being stolen.  Senator Deb Fischer of Valentine says paper checks create an even greater risk of that.
“What we’re doing now is what 49 other state’s do, so instead of writing a check and having the person behind the counter ask to see your driver’s license, which you show them, which they then write your driver’s license number at the top of your check, they run it through and check it that way and cash your check.”
The information can only be saved for 18 months. The intent is to use the information from the bar code when someone wants to buy alcohol, tobacco, and lottery tickets.
