Nelson says he tried to get Stupak language in the bill

U-S Senator Ben Nelson has agreed to a compromise on the abortion issue in the Senate health bill that is not as strong as the anti-abortion language in the house bill. That has left some pro-lifers upset. Nelson was a guest on CNN’s State of The Union and says he doesn’t feel he’s let his pro-life supporters down.
“No not at all, as a matter of fact what they haven’t said is we tried to pass the Stupak language earlier in the congress last week and it was called the Nelson, Hatch, Casey bill and it didn’t get enough votes, so the schoice was to do nothing or try to do something in case that language doesn’t hold in the conference report.”

Nelson says although he is a Democrat, he is an independent thinker that will consult with others when he is making a decision.
