Ogallala jewelry store loses $70K in goods to thief

A Christmas grinch is being sought in an Ogallala jewelry store burglary. According to Ogallala Police Chief David Kling, someone broke the front glass of Reichert’s Jewelry in downtown Ogallala early Sunday morning. Once inside, the assailant got into multiple display cases and took some jewelry.
It is unclear exactly how much the merchandise is worth, though owner Tammy Reichert said it’s in the ballpark of $60,000 to $70,000 worth of mostly sterling silver and semi-precious stones. Police responded within moments of the alarm being sounded, however when they arrived there was no sign of the thief.
Kling says it’s unclear if the assailant was working solo or if there were more people involved. The glass was promptly repaired and Reichert says the shop is open for business. She also wanted the public to know that customer jewelry that may have been in the shop for cleaning, resizing or resetting is perfectly safe. She said those items, along with some of the more expensive pieces, get put into a vault every evening.
Authorities encourage you to contact them if you have any information on this or any other crime. Contact your local police department or you can contact the Keith County Crimestoppers at 308-284-4600.
