Bluejays Drop Second Straight

Creighton dropped its second game in as many days at the Old Spice Classic, falling 80-67 to Xavier on Friday afternoon at the Milk House at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.  Freshman Ethan Wragge led the Bluejays with a career-high 21 points as he hit five three-pointers in the loss.  Xavier’s Jordan Crawford led all players with 22 points to help the Musketeers improve to 4-1 on the year, while dropping the Jays to 2-3.
Creighton never led in the game, after Xavier hit the first shot of the game and went up 9-4 to start the game.  The Jays responded to pull even at 11-11 when Kenny Lawson Jr. made a lay-up with 14:13 left in the opening half.  The score was 21-19 in favor of the Muskeeters, before Xavier went on a 10-2 run to push ahead by 10 with seven minutes to play.  Xavier’s largest first-half lead was 14, up 39-25 with 1:27 left in the opening half.  CU scored the final six points of the half, with Wragge draining a three-pointer at the buzzer to make the half time score 39-31 in favor of XU.
CU hit just 4-of-15 (.267) three-pointers in the first half, while the Musketeers shot 51.7 percent from the floor (15-29) in the opening 20 minutes.  XU owned a 22-15 rebounding edge in the fist half.
The Bluejays continued their run in the second half, scoring the first basket after halftime to cut Xavier’s lead to six.  But the Musketeers would score the next seven points to push ahead by 13.  After another Wragge three-pointer got the Jays back within seven with just over five minutes expired in the half, the Musketeers used a 19-7 run over the next five minutes to take control of the game.
Crawford scored 15 of his 22 points after halftime, hitting three three-pointers after the break to help him shoot 4-of-5 from long range and 8-of-12 from the field.  He led the way from distance, as the Musketeers shot 9-of-18 from three-point range in the game, including 6-of-9 after halftime.  Terrell Holloway added 12 points and team-best six assists for Xavier.
Wragge made 5-of-11 three-point baskets, was 7-of-13 from the field and 2-for-2 at the free-throw line to account for his career-best 21 points.  The rookie also led the team with six rebounds and the team’s only steal, all coming in 17 minutes off the bench.  Both Lawson and Justin Carter finished with 10 points and four rebounds for Creighton.
CU shot just 38.8 percent (26-67) from the field, 30.8 percent (8-26) from three-point range and 63.6 percent (7-11) from the free-throw line.  Darryl Ashford led the team with four of CU’s 15 assists in the game.
XU made 53.7 percent (29-54) of its shots from the field.  The Musketeers, who entered the game out-rebounding opponents by 16 per game, edged the Jays on the glass 36-35, with CU owning a 20-14 edge on rebounds after halftime.
The Bluejays have Saturday off before concluding play at the Old Spice Classic at 9 a.m. (CST) on Sunday morning.  Creighton takes on the loser of the Iona vs. Baylor contest which is the last game of the day on Friday.
