Union Count official resigns, facing $200,000 in embezzlement charges

Former Union County Clerk Brad Morris has turned himself on charges of misconduct in office and embezzlement of public funds.
According to arrest warrants Morris embezzled in excess of $200,000 from the counties Child Support fund between January and October of this year. A warrant says Morris admitted to the crimes.
Union County Sheriff David Taylor said he received reports that child support checks were bouncing. People who owe child support pay it into an account before it’s sent to parents. Morris supervised that account in the Union County Clerk of Court’s office.
Morris was released on a $30,000 bond Tuesday. He’s the fourth current or former official in Union County to be charged. County Supervisor Donald Betenbaugh, former Tax Assessor Willie Randall Jr. and former Sheriff Howard Wells were indicted on various federal charges in a corruption investigation. In addition, in the City of Union, former Mayor Bruce Morgan and Zoning Administrator Jeff Lawson are already serving prison sentences for taking bribes.
Morris resigned from office in October. In his letter of resignation to Governor Mark Sanford, Morris wrote, “May no man that walks the earth be judged by his highest or lowest point, but rather by the goodness of his soul and his tender acts performed over a lifetime.”
