Big Red Report–running back situation

Head coach Bo Pelini has said since he arrived that the Huskers will be a football team that runs the football and still believes, even in the pass happy spread of the Big 12, running the football is still vital to the Huskers success. Well, now the success of the offense may fall on the shoulders of quarterback Zac Lee.
The Missouri Tigers did a good job of clogging up the middle, taking away the running game and forcing Lee to try to throw the ball to the outside. It worked for three quarters in a driving rain, but Lee adapted and the team poured on 27 points in the fourth quarter.
In practice, the Huskers running game took a hit when freshmen Rex Burkhead injured his foot and will be out. On today’s Big Red Report, you’ll hear from running backs coach Tim Beck and what he saw and how offensive coordinator Shawn Watson needs to scramble a bit to find a back up for Roy Helu.
Helu is also bothered by a sore right shoulder, so depth certainly becomes a concern. When I scan the roster for the Huskers, it jumps out, they are young at that running back position. Two true freshmen and three redshirt freshmen are listed as I-backs or running backs.
That has prompted the Huskers to move Marcus Mendoza, who moved to wide receiver this spring, back to the running back and now Watson along with coach Beck are trying out different combinations trying to find something that may work.
