SC principal named best in nation

Wando High School Principal Lucy Beckham received the prestigious honor of 2010 National Principal of the Year. The award, given by MetLife and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), was announced Monday during a surprise assembly at the school. The South Carolina Association of School Administrators named Beckham the 2009 Principal of the Year in South Carolina, which made her a candidate for the national honor.
Beckham has dedicated 33 years in the education field, with 15 of those in administration. She has been at Wando High School since 1998, which currently enrolls around 3,100 students. Under Beckham, Wando also recently received national recognition by U.S. News and World Report as one of the best schools in the country.
Among the presenters at Monday’s assembly was State Superintendent Dr. Jim Rex, Charleston County Superintendent Nancy McGinley, MetLife representatives, and South Carolina Association of School Administrators Executive Director Molly Spearman. Superintendent McGinley said “She is a national leader who inspires excellence in everyone around her.”
