SC auto fraud ring leader pleads guilty

A Colleton County man pled guilty to presenting false claims for seven fraudulent wrecks. Richard Leon Pinkney of Walterboro was sentenced to 10 years in jail Wednesday after pleading guilty to an auto fraud ring in Colleton County. Allison Dean Love with the South Carolina Insurance News Service says Pinkney pled guilty to seven fraudulent wrecks that involved a total of 21 defendants, and $105,000 in restitution.
Two of the staged accidents were blamed on the driver swerving to avoid hitting wild hogs in the road. Pinkney presented false claims on each of the seven staged accidents. On his first six charges, Judge Perry Buckner sentenced Pinkney to serve his time concurrently with his federal sentence of 226 months in prison for unrelated charges.
The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office prosecuted the case and SLED investigated.
