CU men's soccer #1 in region, another women's honor

The Creighton men’s soccer team is ranked on top of the Midwest Region rankings as ranked by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). For the third straight week, the Creighton women’s soccer team has a Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week.
The Bluejays concluded last year ranked No. 1 in the Midwest for the final eight weeks of the regular-season and begin this season back on top. After opening the year 1-0-1, including a win over No. 23 Cal Poly, the Bluejays moved from sixth to fifth in the NSCAA/adidas top 25 this week.
Chris Schuler and the Creighton men’s soccer defense have picked up where they left off after a record-setting 2008 campaign, posting two shutouts to open the year. Schuler, a National Player of the Year candidate, has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week .
Schuler played all 200 minutes last week, as Creighton logged a scoreless draw against Loyola (Ill.) last Tuesday and then shut out 23rd-ranked Cal Poly, 1-0, on Saturday night. The center back was again dominating in the air and frustrated the opposition’s attack throughout the pair of shutouts.
In women’s soccer the Missouri Valley Conference announced that Emily Orbell was the Offensive Player of the Week for her four-point weekend.
Orbell had a goal and two assists in Creighton wins on Friday over Cal State Northridge (2-1) and Sunday over Lamar (3-0). Orbell, a junior, was also honored prior to the season earning a selection to the preseason all-MVC team.
