Big Red Report–tempo for offense, intensity for defense

The AP and Coaches Top 25 polls came out yesterday. The Huskers come in this week 22nd in the AP and 18th in the coaches poll. Head coach Bo Pelini isn’t buying into those rankings at all.
Pelini, while singling out several players for their good play on Saturday, he voiced his displeasure with the team for not living up to the Husker standard he’s trying to uphold and he was critical of the defense calling them soft at times.
I applaud him for wanting Husker football to get back to where it should be, and I’m not making excuses for the players, but we’re in game one of 12 and let’s be honest it was Florida Atlantic of the Sunbelt Conference and it was a 49-3 win. I would think it would be kind of hard to keep your intensity up a full 60 minutes in a rout?
One thing Pelini pointed to that he thinks will help the offense is if they can improve their tempo. He said it never felt like the offense could get into much of a rhythm. Offensive coordinator Shawn Watson said there are some easy fixes for that.
Watson was complimentary of running back Roy Helu JR. saying the country may be starting to see what the coaching staff has known for quite awhile…that running Helu is one of the best backs in the Big 12.
