Fire dep't accidentally burns down barn

Investigators have little doubt as to the cause of a Sunday fire. According to Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department Chief Bill Fortune, a controlled fire southeast of Ogallala got out of hand and spread to a nearby barn.

Some wind and a few days of dry weather combined to send embers flying beyond the intended distances. Fortune says embers likely landed on the old, empty barn, burning it down very swiftly.

Fortune said once the crews got on scene, the barn was already completely engulfed and nearly burned down. Fire crews stuck around for about an hour making sure the fire was out.

Officials remind people that, despite a wetter than normal spring and early summer, the summer can be a dangerous time for controlled burns. Officials urge extreme caution when using fire, whether a controlled burn, camp fire or other application.
