Folly Beach may ban alcohol

After a crowded Fourth of July weekend and the mess it left behind, the only alcohol-permitted beach in Charleston may ban that freedom.
Folly Beach ( Beach is the only beach in the Lowcountry that still allows beachgoers to drink alcohol on the beach. That could soon change after the way Folly Beach looked following the Fourth of July weekend. Mayor Carl Beckmann Jr. told WCSC in Charleston that the litter, which he says included beer cans, towels, bottles and coolers, was an embarrassment.
“I don’t have enough funds to use to hire somebody, an outside contractor, to keep the beach clean. The banning of alcohol, really, is a quick fix that everybody thinks will work,” says Beckmann.
Folly Beach Town Council is now considering an alcohol ban on the beach, after the Post and Courier of Charleston reported officials filled up two garbage trucks of trash from the beach.
There were more than 40,000 people on Folly Beach for the Independence Day weekend.
