Legislators take up death penalty bill today

Nebraska lawmakers are scheduled to debate the issue of lethal injection today. Senator Mark Christensen, of Imperial, says this debate has the potential to last longer than many legislators would like.

“You’ll still have that handful that’ll want to talk a while and they’ll draw this out two, three hours,” Christensen says. “The biggest deciding factor will be the people that support it. Are they going to keep getting up and talk two and three times in rebuttal or are they just gonna’ let the other side talk themselves to death and get ‘er done?”

Nebraska’s sole method of execution, the electric chair, had previously been ruled unconstitutional. Lawmakers will be debating a bill that would make lethal injection the state’s only method of execution.
