NU softball opens NCAA's with 4-2 victory

Seniors Darcy Rutherford and Amanda Duran came up with back-to-back RBI singles in the top of the ninth inning to lift the Nebraska softball team to a 4-2 victory over Jacksonville State in the first game of the NCAA Knoxville Regional at Lee Stadium on Friday.
After a lengthy three hour and eight minute rain delay, the Husker bats woke up with five hits in the final two innings. Prior to that, NU mustered just three hits in the first seven innings.
Senior right-hander Molly Hill (25-13) picked up the win as she threw a complete game. Hill allowed two runs on seven hits. The key for her was no walks.
The Huskers had opportunities to score early and often, but couldn’t take advantage. In the first, NU left the bases loaded after having only one out. In the sixth, NU couldn’t put the game away stranding runners on second and third with no outs.
In the ninth, NU came up with back to back hits as Rutherford picked up an RBI on an infield single and Duran then followed with another RBI single down the left field line.
It was Nebraska first NCAA Tournament victory since 2006.
NU, now 35-7 play at 12:30 CDT in the winner’s bracket and face host #13 Tennessee.
