Monster wind farm planned for Banner County

A energy developer from Illinois is announcing plans to build a $60-million wind farm in western Nebraska.
Officials with Chicago-based Midwest Wind Energy say the massive windfarm will cover between 60 and 100-thousand acres in Banner County on which will be placed between 600 and 800 turbines. Combined, they’ll generate some 2,000 megawatts of electricity.
Midwest says it’s been working with landowners and local officials on the project. State officials say the lack of a transmission grid to move electricity from wind farms to utilities has been a big obstacle to further developing wind power in Nebraska.
The Banner County project is designed big to encourage grid improvements, though it could take a decade to finish.
