The Lincoln Stars survived a feverish comeback attempt from the Sioux Falls Stampede as Eric Alexander scored 4:33 into overtime to win 4-3 and take a 2-1 series lead in this USHL best of five opener.
The Stars led 2-0 after two periods and took a 3-1 lead with just over 15 minutes to play after Ryan Kretzer scored less than a minute after Sioux Falls got on the board.
Sioux Falls rallied in the closing minutes of regulation when Terry Broadhurst scored on a power play goal with 3:03 to play. Then, with the goalie pulled, Broadhurst scored to tie the game with :21 to play.
The Stars held Sioux Falls without a shot in the overtime before Alexander’s winner. The Stars can wrap up the series on Friday night.
