Whatever the reason for the WNIT first round bye, I don’t like it. I’m not making excuses, but the Nebraska Cornhuskers had a 13 day layoff and it showed in their shooting as they lost 54-43 to New Mexico.
The Husker last played on March 12th against Kansas in the Big 12 tournament and failed to get into any kind of rhythm, shooting 11 of 47. Cory Montgomery lead the team with 15 points.
Despite the poor shooting, Nebraska was down by just one at 28-27 early in the second half and by just four at 37-33 after Montgomery’s second straight three-pointer with 14:27 left in the game.
Then the Huskers hit a wall. Nebraska went 11 minutes without a field goal and New Mexico jumped out to a 16-point lead.
Nebraska finishes 15-16 overall after advancing to its sixth consecutive postseason appearance.
