Escaped inmate captured in Panhandle

An escaped inmate from the Cheyenne County Jail is back in custody. Twenty-two-year-old John Way was arrested about two hours after escaping from jail at 3:30 Tuesday afternoon.

Sheriff Darrell Johnson says Way escaped from the exercise yard, through razor wire fencing lining the top of the yard. Way was spotted in an alley in downtown Sidney shortly after the escape but was on the loose until he was tracked down at 5:30.

Way had been in jail awaiting trial on felony charges stemming from break-ins at Don’s Oil and Tire in Dalton and the Linger Longer Bar in Lodgepole. He’s also accused of taking part in stealing a van and guns from a residence in Deuel County.

Sheriff Johnson says Way was being taken to Memorial Health Center to be checked out for injuries sustained during his escape through the razor fencing.
