Humane Society honors two ex-legislators

Two former Nebraska state senators are being honored by the nation’s largest animal rights’ group.

The Humane Society of the U-S has singled out former state Senator Ernie Chambers of Omaha as its first-ever recipient of the State Legislator Lifetime Achievement Award. The society cited Chambers’ work in updating animal cruelty statutes, like banning trapping along county roads and increasing inspections of puppy mills.

Chambers says he was thrilled with the honor, saying -quote- “creatures are never dishonest, hypocritical and are exactly what they appear to be.”

Former state Senator Vickie McDonald of St. Paul also received the society’s State Legislator Award for her efforts to upgrade the state’s dangerous dog laws.

Chambers and McDonald were both pushed out of the Legislature last year by term limits.
