Creighton beats So. Illinois in overtime

Creighton hit consecutive three pointers to help overcome a four-point deficit in the final minute of overtime and hit crucial free throws to defeat Southern Illinois, 73-72, on Wednesday night in Omaha.
Down by three with three seconds left in regulation, Creighton forced overtime when Cavel Witter was hit three straight free throws after getting fouled on a three point attempt.
The Salukis went 67-65 with 1:53 left in overtime when Ryan Hare found an open Tony Boyle inside for a dunk. After a missed three-pointer from CU’s Booker Woodfox, Boyle put SIU up by four with 1:06 to go on a layup.  A steal by Josh Dotzler and threes by P’Allen Stinnett got CU to within one with 46 seconds remaining.
Stinnett took a charge and Woodfox drained a three-point basket with 21.4 seconds left.  Kenton Walker would hit two free throws to push CU’s lead to four, which was enough when Mullins sank a 30-footer at the buzzer for the final margin.
Creighton is now 14-4 overall (4-2 MVC), while Southern Illinois dropped to 7-10 (2-4 MVC). Creighton returns to action on Saturday with a 3:05 pm contest at Wichita State.
