Huskers headed to Gator Bowl

Sean Callahan of Huskersillustrated.com who contributes to the Big Red Report says the Huskers will be headed to the Gator Bowl on January 1st.  They would play either Florida State,  Clemson, or Georgia Tech.
He also told me, a technicality is preventing the news from becoming official.  We’re basically waiting for the BCS conference call this afternoon.  Once it’s official that NU is not a BCS team, the announcement is expected.
I found this interesting, with Nebraska’s win over Colorado and Missouri’s loss to Kansas, the Huskers ended with a 5-3 record in the Big 12, the same as the Tigers.  Their all purpose receiver Jeremy Maclin said the MU-KU game was important to Missouri even though they had already clinched a spot in this weekend’s Big 12 title game.  It doesn’t change anything, but it’s nice to know Missouri was looking in their rearview mirror at Nebraska, and now news of a January 1st bowl game in Bo Pelini’s first year.  It’s a good day.
Nebraska sophomore place-kicker Alex Henery has been named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week following his record-setting effort in the Huskers’ 40-31 victory over Colorado last Friday.  Alex connected on four field goals, including a game-winning 57-yarder with 1:43 remaining in the contest. The 57-yard field goal was a Nebraska school record and Memorial Stadium record.  The previous record was 55 yards.
