Escaped prisoners captured

Two Panhandle men convicted of attempted burglary have been re-sentenced after escaping a work camp in McCook and leading authorities on a chase. Nineteen-year-old’s Peter Peyton and Charles Meister will spend between 16 and 48 months in the Nebraska Penal Complex for probation violations stemming from their convictions of Attempted Burglary in Lodgepole, Nebraska.

According to court documents, Peyton and Miester escaped from the McCook Work Ethic Camp on October 12, allegedly stole a vehicle and drove south into Kansas where they stole a truck and led authorities on a chase in Oklahoma.
The truck crashed and they were captured in Beaver County.  After the pursuit and crash, Meister was taken to Amarillo, Texas where he was in critical but stable condition and Peyton was held in an Oklahoma jail.
Both men admitted to escaping and were sentenced to prison Tuesday in Cheyenne County District Court. Prosecutors say Payton is also facing felony charges of theft and criminal mischief in Red Willow County where the work camp is located. On the Nebraska Radio Network, I’m Dave Collins.
