It appears that Nebraska lawmakers will be addressing at least two safe haven bills when they meet for special session next month. Governor Heineman’s proposal would limit the use of the law to babies in their first three days. Another proposal would have a thirty day age limit. That makes more sense to Lincoln State Senator Diana Schmek.
Senator Schimek tells us that the publicity surrounding the current safe haven law wasn’t all bad. Senator Schimek says that the number of older children being dropped off at Nebraska hospitals helped to illustrate that a lot of children are falling thru the cracks. And Schimek adds that Nebraska needs to address the problem in the January session.
