Deadline is here for $300 check from Uncle Sam

The last-chance deadline is Wednesday for Nebraskans who still haven’t filed for the economic stimulus payment from the federal government. I-R-S spokeswoman Carrie Resch says the agency is making one final attempt to reach those who could still qualify.

Resch says about 80-percent of the people who don’t normally file tax returns did file this year to get the payment. The remaining 20-percent face a deadline of October 15th. You may be eligible if you made at least three-thousand dollars or benefits during 2007.

She says some people have gotten bogus information. The stimulus payments are not taxable. Also, she says some people may fear that filing a return once means they’ll have to file next year, too, and that’s not the case.

Resch says more than 20-thousand Nebraskans are still eligible for the payments but haven’t filed.
