Mavericks ready for first MIAA game

The Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks football team has certainly upgraded it’s compeition by joining the MIAA conference, yet they lead the rankings as they get ready for their conference opener.  Five of the top 25 teams in the Division-II rankings come from the MIAA, with the Mavericks leading the way at No. 5.
Playing as the MIAA’s top-ranked squad while making its conference debut, No. 5- Nebraska-Omaha (1-0, 0-0 MIAA) hosts Emporia State (2-0, 0-0 MIAA). It is the first meeting between the two squads since 1973 — and the first as members of the same conference since 1972, when the Mavericks and Hornets were a part of the NAIA’s Great Plains Athletic Conference.
UNO started slowly in its opener last Saturday (Sept. 6), but the floodgates opened with a 35-point third quarter as the Mavericks defeated instate foe Nebraska-Kearney, 49-21, to retain possession of the Victory Bell.
Emporia State opened the schedule 2-0 for the second time in as many seasons with a 27-14 win over Augustana (S.D.).
