No decision on "alcopops" until later this year

There was a packed house today at the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission as they held a hearing on what’s known as “alcopops”.  The drinks like hard lemonade are currently classified and taxed the same as beer which is a lower rate than hard alcohol.  Members of anti-drinking groups in Nebraska want that changed.  They want the beverages considered hard liquor as they contain distilled spirits.  They also say that the drink is targeted for kids as they have a candy-like appeal.  It was two years ago that the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission classified “alcopops” as beer as they followed a similar decision by the federal government.  The Commission will not vote on the proposed change until September or October.
