Senator Nelson battles closed door EPA meeting

High octane debate on Capitol Hill. Senator Ben Nelson is urging lawmakers and the government in general to reduce the fuel they use on a daily basis. He wants the Federal Government to take the lead and cut fuel use by five percent. That does not include fuel used for the military or in the areas of theater of war.
Senator Nelson is also very upset with a closed door meeting that EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson had with Texas Governor Rick Perry on July 9th. They met to discuss a request by Perry to waver the renewable fuels standards.
Senator Nelson wrote a letter with a group of other senators demanding that Administrator Johnson meet with members of Congress to discuss that meeting.
This could be a setback to the biofuel industry. A decision on Perry’s request is due on Thursday so Senator Nelson says time is critical. He opposes the waver and does not believe it is warranted.
