The barricades are now up at the Veterans’ Memorial Bridge at 13th and Missouri Avenue in Omaha. The bridge that carries traffic between Iowa and Nebraska is now closed. Carl Burns with the Nebraska Department of Roads says this is to complete work on the Nebraska side of the river. A new intersection is being built for the new bridge structure that is in progress. In September, the bridge will re-open to traffic but will close in the late summer of 2009 for good. By the late summer of early fall of 2010; the new structure will be open.
This will have quite an impact on traffic traveling between Nebraska and Iowa. Well over 20-thousand cars travel the bridge daily compared to only 12-plus-thousand in 2006. The bridge that connects Nebraska and Iowa at Plattsmouth is also closed.
